Hello, Fellow Animal Protectors!

As you know, RMAD would not be as strong as it is without our amazing volunteers. Stephanie Janard has offered huge amounts of help with the advertising section in our forthcoming vegetarian living guide. Stephanie has already secured a number of ads for the publication, and the proceeds will go directly to finance the printing. This is a crucial component in the project and demonstrates that businesses and organizations across the country are supportive of both RMAD’s work and the vegetarian way of life. Thanks, Stephanie!

Kellie, Allison, and Donna helped with the Prairie Dog Action relocation efforts last weekend in which some 40 prairie dogs were saved. Volunteering with PDA is a great way to learn the ins and outs of urban prairie dog habitats, and getting involved with these hands-on project make an immediate impact in the lives of animals. Thanks, Kellie, Allison and Donna!

Speaking of lawyers, are you a lawyer? Or, do you know a lawyer or two (or three) who are willing to volunteer some time to the animals? RMAD is always seeking legal assistance, most often with companion animals in tough situations, but occasionally other situations involving wildlife or farmed animals. If you or someone you know can help, please let me know at
ChrisJ@rmad.org.

We also need a volunteer to attend “Shoulder 2 Shoulder,” a community group formed last March in response to racist incidents that victimized African-American CU students. Several local environmental and other groups are participating in a dialog that explores how we can foster an atmosphere of inclusiveness and empathy – the same values we strive for in the animal rights movement. RMAD would like to have a presence at this group, which is planning to meet on a weekly basis. If interested, contact me
ChrisJ@rmad.org.

We’re still thinking about our fall celebration so please let Donna (DonnaM@rmad.org) know what kind of event you’d like to attend and/or if you would like to help plan or volunteer. We’re leaning toward a potluck but if you have some other ideas, please share!

Barbara Bear tells us that the Peaceable Kingdom DVDs RMAD donated are now available at Boulder Public Library's Main and Meadows branches. “The happy part is that neither of them is currently available because they've been checked out,” Barbara said, “and the Main branch DVD has already been checked out twice that I know of.”

Great friend to RMAD and even greater friend to the animals, Marc Bekoff, will be on Good Morning America on September 9 to discuss morality in animals. Check it out!!

We still need electronic images of the RMAD community in action at a protest, gathering, relocation, potluck, or otherwise! If you would like to share this for our use, please send to Chris at
ChrisJ@rmad.org.

Our friends at Skyline Sanctuary & Education Center have announced a position with their organization for Director of Humane Education. 8.24.05

Hello, Fellow Peace Warriors:

The prairie dogs need your help!

We need as many people as possible to attend the Boulder Urban Wildlife Management Plan meeting tonight to show the city we want non-lethal control. You can start by taking one or two minutes to visit
http://www.ci.boulder.co.us/planning/wildlife_plan/commentform.htm and comment in favor of non-lethal control for prairie dogs (and perhaps other wildlife species). Lindsey says, “Remember, prairie dogs equal ecosystem!”

The meeting takes place at the West Senior Center, 909 Arapahoe, and begins at 6 p.m., though the first half hour is an open house, and runs until 8:30 p.m. (followed by another open house). We are told that the purpose of this meeting is “to get input on the various viewpoints in the community about the value of urban wildlife, conflicts with wildlife, and the long-term vision for wildlife conservation. The feedback will help staff develop specific management philosophies and actions for a wildlife management plan.” Please attend! If you know you are coming for sure, please email Lindsey at
LindseyS@rmad.org. Some people will be meeting at Alexander’s (the new, larger version, across from Mustard’s Last Stand) at 5 p.m. to gather and fuel up.

The prairie dogs are under endless assault. This week we answered numerous phone calls and e-mails dealing with prairie dogs on private property, being poisoned on city property across the Front Range, and about how to get them relocated to safety. We also assisted in another six inquiries dealing with companion animals and another ten ranging from fires in Yugoslavia to legal issues involving wildlife.

Companion Animals:
If you read the Colorado Daily, you might find a bilingual RMAD spay/neuter file inside! We worked with the Colorado Daily to distribute 10,000 of these fliers in today’s campus/hill edition. The flier garnered much positive feedback as a result of Donna’s presentation the previous week, as well as RMAD’s stance on companion animal issues such as declawing. One shelter operator said her cats give us two paws up!

Fundraising:
RMAD spends very little time and money on fundraising, but if RMAD is to continue its crucial work, we need money! We’re planning a fall celebration so please let Donna (DonnaM@rmad.org) know what kind of event you’d like to attend and/or if you would like to help plan or volunteer. We’re leaning toward a potluck but if you have some other ideas, please share!

Save that date:
Great friend to RMAD and even greater friend to the animals, Marc Bekoff, will be on Good Morning America on September 9 to discuss morality in animals. Check it out!!

One person making a difference:
Sheryl Bass had her letter to the editor in favor of prairie dogs printed today! Big thanks to Sheryl. The letter follows the Calendar section.

Did you know?
According to PETA’s rigorous research:
- Each year in the U.S., 27 billion animals are consumed (17 billion are fish, mostly shellfish)
- Each year in the U.S., 10 billion animals are raised and consumed (i.e., on factory farms)

Job Opportunity:
Our friends at Skyline Sanctuary & Education Center have announced a position with their organization for Director of Humane Education. The position is full time with a salary commensurate with experience and education. They're looking to hire as soon as possible, so if you are interested, please take a look and get in touch with them as soon as you can. The link for full information is:

RMAD Community:
Do you have electronic images of the RMAD community in action at a protest, gathering, potluck, or otherwise? If you would like to share this for our use, please send to Chris at ChrisJ@rmad.org. Thanks!

Volunteer Opportunity of the Week:
We need a person to coordinate letter writing for various campaigns. For example, when the circus comes to town, we need people to write letters to local newspapers in opposition to the circus. If you’d like to coordinate this effort or volunteer to write letters, contact Chris at
ChrisJ@rmad.org.

Hope to see you all at the Wildlife Management Plan meeting tonight!

Note on plague:
Plague is actually not "natural"- it is a non-native disease brought over from Europe that our North American wildlife succumb to. Furthermore, sylvatic plague outbreaks in the wild are a major reason why we must regulate the anthropogenic threats prairie dogs face such as poisoning, bulldozing, shooting and any lethal population control.

PRAIRIE DOGS
Plan must contain creative solutions
Today from 6 to 9 p.m., city officials will gather at 909 Arapahoe Ave. to decide the fate of our prairie-dog population. This Boulder Urban Wildlife Management Plan meeting is open to the public and will cover the feasibility of non-lethal methods for addressing human encroachment on wildlife habitats. Prairie-dog management options include relocation, containment (with walls and fences) and trap/neuter/release programs involving the purchase of inexpensive release sites in eastern Colorado.

It has been stated that the city of Boulder spends half a million dollars per year on prairie dogs. In reality, during the past five and a half years, Boulder has spent $122,166 per year on prairie-dog ecosystem management (which assists other area human and animal residents).

Another popular misconception is that prairie dogs transmit plague. It is true that every five years or so, entire prairie dog colonies die off from plague. Perhaps this is nature's way of managing prairie-dog overpopulation. Although prairie dogs are one of 76 mammal species that carry plague, more than 95 percent of infected rodents die within 78 hours. Therefore, if you see live prairie dogs, they likely do not carry plague.

Of the 51 human plague cases in Colorado since 1957, 10 were prairie dog-related and of the 10, only one resulted in death. Infected fleas transmit plague to prairie-dog colonies. Therefore, prairie-dog poisoning releases affected fleas into the environment, posing health risks to domestic pets. Dusting burrows with insecticide powder is a far more effective plague control method.

Nearly every society has addressed the issue of animals they believe are overpopulated ? deemed "pests." Recall the outrage of the international community when thousands of "unsightly" stray dogs were poisoned throughout the streets of Greece just in time for the recent Olympic games. Whether a society attempts to find creative solutions to coexist with non-human residents renders it either callous or compassionate. Let's use this issue to demonstrate the progressive community image Boulder projects.

Hi Friends,

This has been another busy week in the world of animal advocacy. We handled eight calls related to prairie dogs, ranging from the concerned individual who needs to move a solitary occupant from their yard, to persons working at large corporations concerned with the rampant development throughout the Denver area. We handled another half-dozen inquiries related to companion animals, four related to fur, and five more needing information.

Donna made a presentation to a group of about 30 people at the Metro Denver Shelter Alliance’s monthly meeting last week. Attendees were very responsive to RMAD’s plan to offer its companion animals spay/neuter doorhanger flier via PDF files on the RMAD web site. Several animal groups have expressed an interest in downloading these fliers to distribute at clinics and other events. Check out the flier, which is printed in both English and Spanish, at
http://www.rmad.org/comp_animal_flyer.html

RMAD is in the process of planning a fall potluck/gathering/party. Give us your thoughts on what kind of event you’d like to attend!

A team of hard-working volunteers has been busy contacting Boulder residents and others about the upcoming public meeting on the City of Boulder's Urban Wildlife Management Plan. Please come and support our efforts at next week’s meeting on Wed., August 24 from 6-9 pm. We need your voice to ensure that lethal control measures are not implemented against Boulder prairie dogs and other wildlife!

The Compassion Club met again in an intimate and introspective setting with therapist Catherine Zakoian. If you are thinking about attending, don’t let the words “club” or “therapist” scare you! Participants explore the range of emotions that we as activists face and find creative ways to deal with the pain and suffering we see. This group is open to all of you and we hope you’ll join us in the future. The group will be meeting again in mid-September.

Our friends at Skyline Sanctuary & Education Center have announced a position with their organization for Director of Humane Education. The position is FT with a salary commensurate with experience and education. They're looking to hire as soon as possible, so if you are interested, please take a look and get in touch with them as soon as you can. The link for full information is:

8.10.05

Hello Animal Friends!

Lots going on as usual!

First, RMAD was in the media last week. Our perspective on plague made it into the Rocky Mountain News and our push for the study of prairie dog trap-neuter-release options versus lethal control was also covered in the Daily Camera.

We had a good turnout at last week's meeting regarding Boulder's Urban Wildlife Management Plan. RMAD is moving forward with a team to deal with issues related to the UWMP. Our goal is to prevent the city from instituting lethal control measures against prairie wildlife and perhaps birds and other animals. We still need volunteers. If anyone wants to help with outreach, fundraising, etc. contact Paula Lewis (
animal8welfare@yahoo.com). We also need donations to support this effort.

The fur protests continue through the hot weather because the animals remain in cages all year before being killed in the name of fashion. Protest efforts are crucial now before the weather turns and people go shopping for the wrong items. Thanks to Ann for organizing and attending these every single week and for everyone who makes it out there!

RMAD members and activists attended the March of Dimes Demo on Saturday. We’ve been told it was very successful and lots of people stopped to ask questions. Cool!

The Compassion Club meets tomorrow night. If you would like to come, please email me and I’ll tell you where it is and how to get there. Therapist Catherine Zakoian will be there again to help us work through the issues we face as activists and compassionate people in an often uncompassionate world.

Thanks to the efforts of Lynn and Sarah of Three Little Figs, City Street Bagels has Tofutti Cream Cheese topping as an option for a cruelty-free start, middle, or end to your day. Look for the opening of Three Little Figs’ store in the next week and a half or so.

Volunteer opportunity of the week: We are looking for marketing help with the HealthCoop.org project. We’re preparing for the launch of this innovative and cooperative health site that exposes people to the bigger picture involved with a meat-based diet. If you are interested, please contact myself or Lindsey Sterling Krank at
LindseyS@rmad.org.

Please let me know if I missed anything. Have a great remainder of your week.

- Chris

Sunday, August 7: HEALTH Potluck
When: 5:30 p.m.
HEALTH welcomes everyone, regardless of dietary preference, to share a plant-based meal (a meal free of animal products), while learning about a more compassionate lifestyle.
Where: Location: We will be meeting on the 2nd floor at the Highlands Methodist, on the corner of 32nd and Osceola, between Sheridan and Federal in Denver.
For the potluck, bring a plant-based dish (no meat, fish fowl, gelatin, dairy, eggs, honey or other animal derived products) to serve at least 8 people. A plant-based dish can be as simple as, cut up fruits or veggies or a bottle of natural apple juice to share. If you are new to the group, please to come as our guest and let us feed you. Those comfortable with plant-based, please feel free to show off, dazzle us with your talent and bring extra if you like. Also bring a serving utensil, your own place setting, your own drink and a recipe card (with some extras to share) listing the ingredients in your dish (Please note on your recipe card if your dish contains hydrogenated oils for the health conscience folks in the group and also if it contains common allergens such as nuts).
Directions: From the S.E., take Federal, North to 29th. Turn left (West) on 29th to Osceola and turn Right (North). Just before 32nd you will see the Church on the left and a parking lot on the right. You may park in the lot if there's room. You can also take Speer Boulevard, North to 32nd, then go West (left) on 32nd. From the N.E., take Federal, South to 32nd. Turn Right (W) on 32nd to Osceola, the lot will be on your left. From the West, take Sheridan to 32nd and go East to Osceola. The Church and lot will be on your right. 32nd, runs East from 13th and Ford in Golden all the way to Osceola, for those of you coming from Golden or the west side of town. It changes from 13th to 32nd somewhere behind the Coors plant. Go East on 13th and just stay on the main road.
Notes: We will be collecting a small donation (whatever you can afford) for the rent. They usually charge a $75 fee per use but they are being so kind to only charge us $30 + any extra we collect. Note: We might meet downstairs if no one else is using the big room. It is cooler down there in the Summer.

September 22-24: Animal Care Conference
Grand Hyatt, Downtown Denver
RMAD to Participate on Panel
The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS) has worked for animals and animal care facilities for 13 years. This fifth annual conference addresses the need for assessing strengths and weaknesses, implementing effective management practices, building stronger, more sustainable organizations, and seeking common ground within the animal care, protection, and advocacy communities. The movement stands at a crossroad; in order to achieve significant progress towards bettering the lives of animals — not just now but in future generations — animal caregivers must be prepared to advance their goals of greater professionalism, more activism, increased collaboration, less isolation, more learning, and continually improving conditions and standards of care for the animals.

8.3.05

Hello Friends!

We’ve been busy working on some key animal issues....

Donna is working with the Colorado Daily to distribute 10,000 bilingual spay/neuter fliers the week of Aug. 22, when the CU students return to town. We believe this is a critical time to spread the word about the importance of spay/neuter and about the welfare of companion animals. We're also in the process of creating PDFs of the spay/neuter flier so that animal groups throughout the world can post it on their site and print it with their own local contact information.

At the urging of several RMAD volunteers, the Boulder Freecycle list has agreed to prohibit the trading of animals through their list! While the kinks are still being worked out, they are sternly enforcing the rule. This is a huge first step in the battle against offering animals “Free to Good Homes.”

We need some dedicated volunteers to help defend Boulder’s wildlife policies from an all-out assault. As many of you know, the city is in the process of creating an urban wildlife management plan. Without RMAD’s involvement, this plan is almost certain to step up lethal control on prairie wildlife and perhaps birds and other animals. We are holding a meeting to enlist volunteers. It’s scheduled for Wednesday, August 3, from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley (2323 55th Street in Boulder). Volunteer opportunities will include outreach (for example, writing letters, going door-to-door, meeting with key decision-makers); research (for example determining which laws and policies will be affected by the management plan, determining what the city is really spending on prairie dogs), and fundraising (perhaps holding a party or a silent auction or crafting appeal letters – without money RMAD will not be able to effectively coordinate this effort). Our campaign likely will involve working with the city and at least one local corporation researching the feasibility of trap-neuter-release as a management tool for urban/suburban colonies. We’ll provide refreshments. Please come if you can. And if you wish to instead support this project through your donation, please give a call to the office and make your pledge. (Operators will not necessarily be standing by, but we will return your call if you don’t reach us.)

Thanks to the efforts of Matt and Barbara Bear, Tsing Tao at the Table Mesa Shopping Center (Table Mesa and South Broadway) is now offering vegan mock meats in addition to fantastic tofu dishes. They now have vegan egg roll skins and fortune cookies as well. Please stop by and ask to see their vegan menu, tell them how good this is and how much you appreciate their support of cruelty-free food choices. Thanks, Matt and Barbara!

Volunteer Opportunity of the Month: HealthCo-op.org website assistance. RMAD’s forthcoming website promotes a healthy and happy lifestyle through plant-based nutrition. We are looking for folks who want to contribute to helping out animals through their web site skills! Specifically, we seek a flash developer to create a small program for our home page. If you are interested, please email Lindsey at lindseys@rmad.org.
